Stranded Near the Cemetery

Posted by admin

You’re driving along out in the country, when suddenly, you realize that you’re out of gas.  There’s nothing around for miles, save for an old country cemetery.  It will be dark soon, and you’ve heard of dangerous characters who lurk in the area at night, looking for stranded travelers.  What happens next?  Do  you keep walking?  Do you hide?  Do you encounter anyone?

Give us 100+ words in the comments or on your own blog (and let us know so we can all enjoy it!)

It was the second time in all my life my car stopped because out of gas. The first time, many years before, it was in my town, close to my doctor’s surgery, who lent me a can to take to a gas station in the neighborough. Now I was in another country whose language I could barely speak, in sight of a cemetery about which three evenings before a fellow-countryman had told me scary stories. All around me not sign of a house. The question about what to do found little room in my mind, all taken by the anger and the name calling to myself for putting my person in that situation. I was unsure I could find any help in that place, or that a passing car stopped to rescue me. I knew that with the coming of dark all my skepticism and rationality couldn’t keep that grim landscape from haunting me, as my inner ghosts are very easily aroused. I was so angry that I wished to punish myself. Maybe then I would have stopped to act foolishly in all the things of my existence. Maybe then, if the punishment was hard enough, I could have come out of the spiral of complete failure that was my life. So I began to walk. Directed to the cemetery.
