A Girl & Her Sloth

Posted by admin On November - 5 - 2010

We’ve all heard the classic “boy and his dog” story.  But what about the story of a girl and her sloth?  Let’s try that one.  How did they meet?  What is their relationship like?  What dangers face their relationship?  Where do they live?

On a side note, this post was inspired by the Slothpital in Costa Rica.  If ever there were a dream vacation, mine would involve a few weeks of volunteering here with the sick and injured sloths.

Give us 100 words or more in the comments, or blog it and let us know where to find your post.

Elderly Exercise

Posted by admin On August - 26 - 2010

You’re a freelance personal trainer.  You live in Manhattan, and the majority of your clients are wealthy young women who are married to doctors, lawyers, and bankers.  They’re the types who are terrified of growing old and losing their husbands to younger women.

Today, you’re off to visit a new client.  When you arrive, you realize that she is completely different from your usual clients.  Instead of young and perky, you see an elderly woman with a big smile.  What made her seek out your services?  What is she like?  How do you handle it?

Give us as much or as little as you want in response to this writing prompt.  Feel free to leave your comments below, or to post your story to a blog and let us know where to find it.

Posted by admin On May - 24 - 2010

He was part man, part robot.  She was completely in love.  How did he get past her initial objections to his unusual features?  What does he see in her, given all the human imperfections she possesses?  What kind of mundane details are different in a relationship like theirs?

Give us 100 words about their futuristic love story – either in the comments below or on your own blog.  And of course, don’t forget to let us know where we can read it if you decide to reply.

My Husband Has Lost His Mind

Posted by admin On May - 8 - 2010

Over the years, you’ve gotten used to your husband’s sudden, strange ideas.  This one, though, was just a bit much.  Last week, he came home and announced that he had purchased a barn that would become your home – an amazing deal, he said – the perfect way to get back in touch with the world and each other.

You’re wondering how far it will be to the grocery store…how long the commute will be…what will your family and friends think?

Now, he’s taking you out to see it.  What are you thinking and feeling?  What do you say to him?

Glimpse Into a Life You Never Knew

Posted by admin On April - 30 - 2010

Your mother died when you were very young.  So young, in fact, that you have no memories of her.  Although your father has done his best to answer your questions, it’s clear that she was his one great love and he will never fully recover from the loss.  You’ve grown up without photos around the house, and the mental image you have of your mother is a blurry one.

One day you’re browsing books on the shelf, when the photo below falls out.  It’s a touching glimpse of the very few days your mother had with you before she got seriously ill.  What is going through your mind?

Give us 100 words in the comments, or write a response on your blog and let us know where to find it :)

The Faded Photo

Posted by admin On December - 18 - 2009

Your father has passed away and you’re helping your mother go through his possessions.  As you’re doing that, you come across a strange photo of a woman who most definitely is not your mother.  Knowing that your parents grew up next door and spent their entire lives loving each other, what do you do?  Do you ask her about the photo and risk tarnishing your father’s memory?  Do you keep it a secret?  Do you inspect the back for a message?

Give us 100 words in the comments or on your blog.  Just let us know if you write something so we can all enjoy it!

Meeting in the Garden

Posted by admin On June - 24 - 2008

It’s a Wednesday afternoon, and you’re about to meet with someone in this lovely garden.  It’s a warm day, and just out of sight, you can hear the water tumbling softly over the rocks.

Who are you about to meet?  Why are you there?  How do you feel about the meeting?  Where would you normally be on a Wednesday afternoon?

A Surprise at the Close of Day

Posted by admin On June - 21 - 2008

She watched her husband as he came in for the evening. He didn’t know she’d be there to meet him. In fact, she’d never come to meet him like this, not in 30 years of marriage.

What happens next? Who are they? Why is she there?
